Which witch?

When you hear the word witch, what's the first thing to come to mind? Is it an image, the Halloween holiday, a movie character? There are so many witches from television, movies and cartoons and I'm sure I come up with a long list of famous ones. When I was little, I often dressed up as a witch for Halloween. I was never into witches much, other than dressing up a few times. I do however, have a few favorites. One is the witch from Looney Tunes. She cracks me up with her cackle, how she falls in love with Bugs Bunny and how her hairpins fly out everytime she runs away. My favorite animated Disney film has always been "Sleeping Beauty". Malificient is more of an evil sorceress than a witch, but that's close enough. One movie my family watches each Halloween is Hocus Pocus. It has so many classic lines like Penny Marshall saying, "Aren't you broads a little old for trick or treating?" as well as Sarah Jessica Parker bouncing up and down saying, "Amuck! Amuck! Amuck!" It's one of those must-see movies for my family each Halloween. So many famous witches are coming to my mind right now. How about you -- do you have any favorites?

  1. My favorite is the the mini-role of the witch in The Princess Bride. Her line "I'm not a witch, I'm your wife!" cracks me up no matter how many times I hear it! :0)

  3. Christy -- Isn't that witch in The Princess Bride played by Tracey Ullman? She was so funny!

Meredith -- Glinda the good witch is very cool. I always liked her when I was little, whereas I had nightmares about those flying monkeys. If it weren't for Glinda, I doubt I could have gotten through the movie. :)

  4. I've always liked the Wizard of Oz witches too! The wicked one is the one that stands out in my mind if someone says witch.
I am shopping a PB of Halloween nursery rhyme parodies with Willa the Witch as a character. I hope she becomes my favorite next :0)

  5. My favorite witch - of all time - is Bewitched...I loved tht show and will watch reruns any time I come across them...

To me she was the perfect witch...she was pretty, but had the power...no warts on the nose for her...

Of course, If I was a witch, Endora would be the witch I would want to be when I got older...

  6. Kelly -- Good luck with Willa the Witch and I hope she becomes famous world wide!

Brenda -- I grew up watching that show too. I always wanted to be Tabitha and be able to move things by wiggling my nose like she did. Didn't Sam wiggle her chin?

  8. "I'll get you my pretty, and your little dog too." What a great line and a great witch! Of course maybe Willa will be my next favorite too!

Plus I love that picture you found with the cauldron. I was looking for such a picture and never did find one I liked.

  9. One witch I remember well is Baba Yaga from Russia. She was a rather terrifying cannibal who flew through the air in a mortal using the pestle as an oar. Her hut was made of human bones....

  10. When I think of a witch, the first thought is the wicked witch from Wizard of Oz - now that is how a witch is supposed to look like! But my favourite witch of all time is Samantha from Bewitched. I even learned to wiggle my nose like her in the hopes that I could be a good witch too... but no such luck!
