Little Golden Books

Do you have a favorite Little Golden Book? I had my books out the other day and figured I'd take a picture of them since they were already scattered across the floor. I don't have a huge collection, but it's getting bigger. The ones I buy these days are usually found at thrift stores. I look for the older ones that are harder to find. Did you know the very first set of LGBs were printed in 1942? Simon & Schuster initially sold them for 25 cents each. I need to visit our local Salvation Army soon. They sell them for 10 cents each, which is even better!

Some of my favorites are The Shy Little Kitten, The Tawny Scrawny Lion, The Shaggy Baggy Elephant, The Gull That Lost the Sea, and The Little Red Hen. How about you? Do you have any favorites?

  1. Hmmm, think I've done this blog before. Oh well. New picture at least.

  2. There's one that I used to be totally obsessed with. These kids are looking for a mysterious monster that's leaving clues of its existence all over the neighborhood. It ended up being a hippo or rhino or possibly an elephant (I'm fuzzy on the details ... I was very young when I read it). I wish I could remember it better ... I don't think my hazy recollections are even enough to do a good Google search ...

  4. Great post, Rena! I'm fond of The Happy Man and his Dump Truck--the very first favorite book of my middle son, now an electrical engineering student. My daughter was a fan of Ten Items or Less (foreshadowing her excellent shopping skills?)

  6. Oh, we had a ton of Little Golden Books when we were growing up. My favorite is one called "Animal Friends."

And I've got to mention "The Pokey Little Puppy" (which has sold almost 15 million copies and is one of the best-selling children's books ever!). It was my little sister's favorite and my mom read it to us over and over and over again.
