National Sibling Day

Today is National Sibling Day. This is a day to appreciate your brothers and sisters. It was created by Claudia A. Evart after the tragic deaths of her brother and sister. Twenty-two state governors have proclaimed this day, however, it takes an act of Congress to make it a true national holiday. Any day that makes you appreciate someone else is a good day to me.

Do you have any brothers or sisters? I have one of each. My brother is 5 years older than me and my sister is 4 years older. Mike lives in California, close to my mom, and Sharon recently moved to Texas. Sadly, I haven't seen either one in almost 3 years. My children are ages 19, 17, 9, and 7 years. The girls were only 19 months apart, so they grew up very close. The boys are the same way. I got out of the shower yesterday and noticed that both my girls were outside in the yard playing with their little brothers. That was a really sweet thing to see. The picture above is pretty old, taken around 2004, but it's still a favorite of mine. It was back when Neil had really blond hair and Nathan couldn't take a serious picture to save his life. I need to get a recent one of them all together soon, especially before the girls leave home.

Today is also Good Friday, of course, so I hope everyone has a blessed day and can reflect on the meaning on this very special holiday. My all time favorite movie is Jesus of Nazareth, starring Robert Powell. It's a powerful movie and I like to watch it every year around this time. So, whether you celebrate National Sibling Day, Good Friday, or both, I hope you have a wonderful Friday.

  1. I really think Canada should participate in this day as well! There should be a day of celebration for all family members all over the year :) I think you should also get a fish tank ;) They are so much fun, especially when sketching scary algae monsters! haha

  2. What a special day! My two boys were fighting as I was reading your post, so I told them what day it was and to appreciate one another! :) Have a great Easter weekend, Rena.

  3. Crazy that you mention your all time favorite movie. I just wrote a question about that. Hmm...maybe we're reading each other's minds.

Nathan's expression is ADORABLE in that picture. Makes me want to hug him! Thanks for the info about national sibilings day, I'll be sure to call my brother and tell him I love him! : )

  4. Happy Easter... and Happy National Sibling Day!

I love it that my kids are only 22 months apart. I hope they will be the best of friends, though I know they will be thier worst enemies too! lol But at the end of the day, no matter how much fighting they did, they need a hug to go to sleep. Life is good.

I have one brother, he is 4 years older then me and used to treat me horribly growing up. Imagine not doing everything I wanted, when I wanted it. He is still the same way but if I ever need a partner for Trivial Pursuit - he is my first choice.

I hope it becomes a true national holiday - what a lovely idea.

  5. Hi Rena,

Yes, I have two sisters and one brother. One of my sisters lives in Nicaragua and my brother lives in New York, my younger sister lives here in Miami as myself. I get along with all three...isn't it wonderful!
    have a happy friday!

  7. Happy Easter, Rena.

We have a special family day in October that we call 'Sibling Day' to celebrate the times our two adopted children came home (both in October, four years apart).

  8. Happy Easter, Rena. Yes, yes, yes! Jesus of Nazareth with Robert Powell is still the best! My sister and I just swooned over those blue eyes.

  9. I have a sister...we are as opposite as they come but we are best friends...When we have a day together (with no husbands or children) I pull her out of her shell and she keeps me from getting locked up...grin...

  12. Rena;
I have something in common with Claudia Evart and I agree it would be wonderful if the day were national.

I am an ocean away from my four sisters and in the last several years out time together has been too short!

I miss them all the time!

I love the photo of your four children!!! I'll look for a more recent pic -yes, before summer - on your blog!
