Today is National Hug Your Kid Day. However, considering we ran out of sunscreen at the lake yesterday and Nathan was the last to get sprayed, he probably won't want too many hugs today. So, thank goodness today is also National Lollipop Day! I'll have to buy him a lollipop when we get down to Missoula later on -- that might feel better than a hug on his poor sunburned arms. Cherry is his favorite -- it'll match his arms.
I was looking on You Tube last night for a video of the "Lollipop" song by The Chordettes. I found one that showed the ladies themselves, but the sound was off and the video wasn't very good. For another version, click here, to watch the song being played on an old record player. It's a fun song and I'm sure everyone will recognize it. I was surprised by something when I read the lyrics last night. The song goes ...
Sweeter than candy on a stick,
Huckleberry, cherry, or lime,
He'd be your pick,
But lollipop is mine, oh ...
Lollipop, lollipop,
Oh lolli, lolli, lolli ...
That struck me funny to see huckleberry in the song. I don't remember hearing that before, but it's been there all along. Huckleberries are a northwestern berry, so I'd love to find out more on who wrote the song and why huckleberries were chosen, out of all the fruits they could have picked. The song reached #2 in 1958, so it was a little before my time, but I still remember hearing it throughout my childhood. The Chordettes also sang the song "Mr. Sandman", which most people know as well. Neil just heard the song and said, "Hey, Runt sings that in Chicken Little!" So, there you have it -- even today's little ones know this famous song. How cool is that!
What is your favorite type of lollipop? As a kid, I used to love getting those big, swirled ones whenever we went to an amusement park. Disneyland always has some fun designs. Everyone in my family likes Tootsie Pops the most, but I've always loved Charms Blow-Pops with the bubblegum inside. I love the sour apple ones. So, in honor of today's holidays, give your kid a hug and a lollipop! I'll hug Nathan tomorrow, once his sunburn lets up.

Hmm, fave lollipop...that would be a tie between Dum Dum lollipops and LifeSavers Swirled lollipops. I loved getting these on Halloween, besides the chocolate, of course. ;)
ReplyDeleteThe song Lollipop always reminds me of the film Stand By Me. Great flick.

I love the Charm's Blowpops and the tootsie pops...it was like getting more for your money...lollipop and gum...lollipop and chocolate...grin...
ReplyDeleteMy daughter and two friends sang Lollipop, Lollipop in a talent contest in 5th grade. I'll have to pull out the old video and look at it. It was so sweet ;-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for reminding me and giving me that blast from the past :)
I like the lollipops that have the gum inside. And my students loved the song "Good ship lollipop" to dance to! (preschoolers!)
ReplyDeletePoor Nathan! But I admit to laughing because it was a great tie in to your lollipop blog!
ReplyDeleteHeather
Tootsie pops for sure!
ReplyDeleteHope you have some aloe for Nathan and I hope he's feeling better soon!
I love those songs. My favorite is a Tootsie Pop. Grape or cherry. However, now they have pomegranite. YUM!! Oh and watermelon too. It's not bad.
ReplyDeleteHoping you're having fun on vacation.
Nancy
OK, I admit it - I don't really like alot of candy. So I don't have a favourite lollipop now - though if I had to choose I would say grape flavour, followed close by orange. My kids love candy (much to their father's chagrin!) and any time we go to a restaurant they check out the 'sucker basket' at the door as we leave. I can feel their cavities getting bigger each day! lol
