Comic Strips

Do you read comics? Which ones are your favorites? If you've been reading my blog, you probably won't be surprised to hear I love comic strips. I always have. When I was little, I loved pulling the comics page from the Sunday paper. Peanuts was my favorite. I used to read the Peanuts comics books too, the really early ones. I'd devour every page. I loved them. I remember pressing Silly Putty on the comics to get the image. You can't do that anymore because they use a different ink or something. For years now, my favorite has been Garfield. I have the entire collection of Garfield comic books. There are over 40 books now. I rarely buy the newspaper anymore, so I now have to read my favorite comics online. I have Garfield, B.C., Wizard of Id and just recently added Prickly City on my Yahoo page. Reading the daily comics are nearly as important as that first cup of coffee and checking the weather report. I know, I know -- I'm a nut.

So, what about you -- do you have a favorite comic strip?

  1. Hey Rena
I used to just love Calvin and Hobbs - we have all their cartoons in book form now! I don't read as many cartoons lately as we don't get a daily paper anymore... and the only thing I miss about the paper IS the cartoons!

  2. I used to LOOOOVE Garfield as a kid. I used to buy garfield books, pens, notebooks, anything and all things Garfield.

These days, my mind has gone all roller-coaster-wonky, so I tend to gravitate toward Bizzaro.

  3. My all time favorite is Calvin and Hobbes. I have all of the books. I was just telling my 10 year old he should read them. He loves comics and is always drawing his own comic books. His favorite comic is Garfield. I like the Baby Blues cartoon.

  4. I haven't read them in a while, but off the top of my head:

    Get Fuzzy
    FoxTrot
    Mother Goose & Grimm
    Luann
    For Better or For Worse

I loved Garfield as a kid and I'll read it if I come across it, but it's not one of my faves.

  5. Christy -- I used to collect seriously on Garfield back in the 80s. When we moved into one of our first apartments, we had a half bath and I did it up in all my Garfield stuff. Sadly, I got rid of most of it over the years. I wish I hadn't. I still have a few things, like Christmas ornaments and all the books, of course. I recently got The Garfield Trivia book, which is really cool.

I think it's cool you can read most all of the comics online now, rather than just in the newspapers like we had to when we were younger.

  6. I love comics!!! My favorite one right now is Pearls Before Swine (Stephen Pastis is hilarious). But there are a lot more that I really like (Mutts / Sherman's Lagoon / Zits / Mother Goose and Grimm / Jane's World / Over The Hedge), and several old ones that I wish were still around (Calvin and Hobbes / Far Side / For Better or for Worse / Peanuts).

I used to really like Garfield, but he's not as fun lately as he used to be (or maybe I'm not reading on the right days).

I know I'm forgetting some of them. I love, Love, LOVE comics!

BTW, if you want a permanent Silly Puttyish transfer, you can photocopy or print out a comic and then tranfer it on to Sculpy clay and bake it. I haven't tried it, but it's supposed to work.

  7. Family Circus was always my favorite. I liked Baby Blues, Garfield and Charlie Brown when it was still around. We don't get a paper, I haven't read the comics in a long time.

  8. I used to read the comics every Sunday laying on my belly and eating a donut. I think I liked For Better or Worse the best...I also liked The Far Side as I got older.
My kids love Garfield because of the movies!
