Cock-a-doodle-gobble?

What do you wake up to first thing in the morning? Rick has one of those CD player alarm clocks, so he wakes up to music. Usually it's something bold, like a tune from Star Wars. Right now he has it set to the Red Hot Chili Peppers' song "Snow (Hey Oh)". I'm going to have to have him change it because I absolutely LOVE that song. Every time his alarm goes off, it starts up and then he hits the snooze button -- grrrr! He needs to change it to something I don't want to listen to, like Neil Diamond or one of his 80s songs. Then the snooze button won't bother me. However, I also get awoken to what's in the picture today -- turkeys. We have wild turkeys roaming around all over the place. Right now there's a huge flock working their way up the hill in my backyard. A bunch of them were on the deck, as shown in the picture below. The squirrel was trying to get her breakfast, but it was a little intimidating with 6 humongous turkeys stomping around, and more on the ground below. They pigged out, pooped all over my deck, and are now moving back up the hill. It's kind of funny to think about it. At my house in California, our neighbor had this rooster that used to wake me up everyday. The stupid thing would crow all day and all night. Now I get woken up by crazy wild turkeys.

So, I ask you -- what wakes you up in the morning?

  1. You have strange & unusual alarm clocks! Seriously, though, that is so neat. Had turkeys gone through your yard last year?

On work days, I get woken up by TH's alarm clock at 5am. It goes off, I wake up, then roll over & wack TH to turn it off. Of course, he hits the snooze button and it happens all over again. :/

On days off, I wake up by myself. Usually between 6:30-7:30am. 8:30am is my latest, if I've gone to bed late.

  2. You are a zoo, you need to put up a sign and charge admission. LOL Let's see, you have: Bear, moose, elk, deer, mountain lion (sometimes), all different kids of birds, woodpeckers, a couple different kids of squirrels, wild turkeys, raccoons, skunks, what else am I missing? And you live there, you're like Steve Irwin. bwahahaha

I get woken up by Emily. Every morning about 6 am she comes in and lays next to me on the bed and nudges me.

  3. How funny to have turkeys passing through! Love the pictures.

I guess I usually wake to the birds singing outside the window...sometimes our parrot Corfu joins in.

  4. I get woken up at around 3:30 am most mornings by Cookie. He snuffs and paws at me to let him outside. Then at around 6am,Matthew the cat meows at me to get up and give him canned food. Sometimes I throw pillows at him to buy me a few minutes of peace. Sigh. Animals can be a pain sometimes. I love wild turkeys, especially when they run, with those long gangly legs.

  5. Great pics of the turkeys! They are so close to the house. My inlaws have turkeys by their vacation home but they rarely come close to the house.
Usually my oldest son wakes me up, but lately it's been my new puppy! Either way, I don't mind waking up to those cuties!

  6. My dogs barking will sometimes wake me up, but that's about it for this house. When we lived in TN there was a woodpecker that loved to pound on our chimney at 6 AM. I HATED that bird.

  8. How wonderful to have wild turkeys coming round. My inner alarm clock wakes me up most mornings. Right around 5 AM, regular as...well, regular as clock work.

  9. I've finally reached the point where my alarm clock beep wakes me up.

I had a long checkered history of my mom literally throwing water on my head and then, during college, setting my alarm to a horrible radio station that I couldn't stomach for more than a second and placing it across the room. Worked like a charm.

  11. Free to a good home, one husband, tends to snore loudest at 4am. Guarenteed to waken even the heaviest sleeper. Available early mornings only - I'm happy to keep him for the rest of the day.:D

  12. I wake up each morning to the cat meowing at the door - 2 minutes before the alarm is supposed to go off. I don't know why I bother to set the alarm.

  13. Funny - my calendar for April has turkeys on it. People stop by my desk and ask, "Why turkeys?"

I thought the same thing - something to do with an expo turkey fair :)

I always just wake up - before the alarm.

  14. I wish I could say a pet! As a kid I had a puppy and two kittens that would wake me up. But now, I somehow wake myself up every day.

  15. Do turkeys migrate because we just had some here near our house and we're in Oklahoma. There's a creek nearby and they stopped for a drink and a gobble.

  17. Great pictures! Wow - I can't even imagine!

So what wakes me? Every morning I wake to the same sound... it happens like clockwork at 5:30am. I hear "Mooooommmmmmmy, morning time" It is my 2 year old who is in her crib and calls me to come get her so we can cuddle on the couch til about 7:00 when her brother wakes up. How the heck I got a morning person for a kid is beyond me.... lol

But it is a beautiful wake up call.. I just wish it came an hour later!
