Happy Birthday, Elvis!

Today would have been Elvis Presley's 75th birthday. There's a big celebration today on the north lawn at Graceland with Priscilla and Lisa Marie cutting a birthday cake. One of these days I'll get myself to Memphis to check it out; I've never been there. I have however, seen Elvis live in concert quite a few times. Not many people I know can say that. My mom used to take me to see him perform at the International Hilton in Las Vegas. I saw him once in Los Angeles, but it wasn't the same. There was a certain magic to his Vegas shows -- I didn't feel it in LA. I still get goosebumps whenever I hear 2001: A Space Odyssey. Elvis always opened up with that song and the atmosphere in the showroom was incredible. His '68 Comeback Special is probably one of my favorites of all time ...

  3. I love Elvis. I hate that one his most trusted friends/advisors took so much advantage of him. He was so talented and ahead of his time. It didn't hurt that he was fine.

  4. 75 years old. Wow. I don't think icons can live til they are 75. I mean would Elvis still be Elvis in the seniors residence? Would Marilyn still give shivers in that white dress if she were 80? Would James Dean still be a rebel in Depends? I don't know.

I have been to Graceland and while I am a fan, I was only 7 when Elvis died so I can't say that I am a FAN. I stood by his graveside surrounded by sobbing women and didn't cry and I didn't try and throw myself on a couch in the jungle room. But I did thoroughly enjoy the tour and seeing the place, seeing what was considered the ultimate in luxury in the 60's and 70's, seeing his gold records cover a huge wall.... now that was awesome.

    Happy Birthday Elvis.
